God's Calling. Are We Running?

THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL: Mark 1: 14-20 (MESSAGE)

After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee preaching the Message of God: "Time's up! God's kingdom is here. Change your life and believe the Message." Passing along the beach of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew net-fishing. Fishing was their regular work. Jesus said to them, "Come with me. I'll make a new kind of fisherman out of you. I'll show you how to catch men and women instead of perch and bass." They didn't ask questions. They dropped their nets and followed.  A dozen yards or so down the beach, he saw the brothers James and John, Zebedee's sons. They were in the boat, mending their fishnets. Right off, he made the same offer. Immediately, they left their father Zebedee, the boat, and the hired hands, and followed.

What was it about Jesus that had Simon, Andrew, James and John dropping everything to follow him?  Did he have a great marketing plan?  Was his an offer that couldn’t be ignored?  Did Jesus have a benefits package like none other?  What was it about Jesus that lured these hardworking fishers into a completely new line of work, one for which they had no measurable skill or potential?

What about for us?  Where does Jesus find us and what will he find us doing today?  Will he find us ready for a new adventure?  Will he find us open to a new way of being?  Will he find us eager to step out in faith for God?  Or will we be asking all the standard questions about relocation expenses, benefits, outcomes and business plans?

After looking at this familiar story through the lens of our experience and life, we will explore how God is calling us to follow and share God’s Spirit of Love with the world.  Join us at Christ Church this Sunday, January 22 at 10am when we will hear once again God’s call for each one of us.  Hope to see you at Church.
